For UK furniture and homeware brands, the choice depends on how the range ships: as parcels (table lamps, cushions, tableware, ceramics and small boxed items), or as sofas, wardrobes and beds that need bulky and two-person delivery. This comparison covers Bigblue, AIT Home Delivery (formerly Panther Logistics), ArrowXL, AP+, Meteor Space, fulfilmentcrowd and Huboo.
Key takeaways
- Check the parcel line first. Measure every SKU in its shipping carton: most UK parcel services stop at roughly 30 kg and 1.5 m long (Parcelforce express), and Royal Mail Tracked at 61 × 46 × 46 cm.
- Split the range if you need to. Parcel-sized stock goes to an ecommerce fulfilment provider, large furniture to a bulky or two-person specialist.
- Ask for the order preparation error rate. Look-alike SKUs, such as a vase in three sizes or a cushion cover in twelve colours, are where homeware picking goes wrong.
- Ask how breakage is measured. Goods stay at your risk until the customer takes possession, so you need a damage rate in your reporting, not a pile of complaints.
- Check sets and stockists. Ask whether sets are assembled in the warehouse and whether shops are supplied from the same stock as online orders.
Does your range fit in a parcel? UK carrier limits in 2026
Parcel networks are built around conveyor sorting and one driver per van. Anything too long, too heavy or too awkward for that model moves to a larger service or leaves the parcel network altogether. These are the published limits of the main UK carriers:
| Carrier and service | Maximum weight | Maximum size | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Mail Tracked 24 (medium parcel) | 20 kg | 61 × 46 × 46 cm | Small parcels stop at 45 × 35 × 16 cm and 2 kg |
| Evri (published sending guide) | 15 kg | 120 cm long; length plus twice the two shortest sides under 245 cm | Evri says it prices UK parcels on weight rather than size within these limits |
| InPost lockers | 15 kg | 41 × 38 × 64 cm (largest locker) | Largest locker size; check your cartons against it |
| DPD (next-day parcel) | 30 kg | 100 × 70 × 60 cm for next-day delivery | Larger or heavier parcels carry an oversize or overweight surcharge; a separate freight-parcel tier takes 31 to 99 kg, up to 3 m long |
| Parcelforce express24 and express48 | 30 kg | 1.5 m long; length and girth combined no more than 3 m | express48large accepts up to 2.5 m long and 4 m length and girth combined, still at 30 kg |
| DHL Express UK | 70 kg | 120 × 80 × 80 cm when booked online or by phone | Larger pieces, up to 300 kg and 300 cm, on quotation |
Girth is the distance around the parcel at its widest point, so length and girth combined is the longest side plus twice the width plus twice the height. For a home range, the line runs through each category rather than between them: a table lamp ships anywhere, while a boxed sofa needs a two-person crew.
Four worked examples from a home range
| Item in its shipping carton | Length and girth | Royal Mail Tracked | Evri | DPD next day | Parcelforce |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Table lamp, 45 × 30 × 30 cm, 4 kg | 165 cm | Accepted | Accepted | Accepted | Accepted |
| Floor lamp, 150 × 35 × 35 cm, 9 kg | 290 cm | Too long (over 61 cm) | Too long (over 120 cm) | Over next-day dimensions: oversize surcharge | Accepted on express24, right at the 1.5 m limit |
| Flat-packed bookcase, 180 × 40 × 12 cm, 24 kg | 284 cm | Too long and too heavy | Too long and too heavy | Over next-day dimensions: oversize surcharge | express48large only (up to 2.5 m) |
| Boxed two-seater sofa, 190 × 90 × 85 cm, 55 kg | 540 cm | No | No | Freight-parcel tier only | No: two-person delivery |
The table is our own calculation from the carriers' published limits. Bigblue's UK standard and express services take parcels up to 30 kg and 61 × 46 × 46 cm, according to the Bigblue help centre, so the table lamp is a Bigblue parcel. The other three belong with Parcelforce, a one-person large-item service or a two-person partner.
Light but bulky goods, such as lampshades, baskets, poufs and large planters, hit size limits long before weight limits. Where a service uses volumetric weight, as Evri does for international parcels (length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000), a 60 × 40 × 40 cm pouf weighing 3 kg is treated as 19.2 kg.
Mirrors, glass shelves and framed prints may pass on size but need rigid packaging that adds centimetres to every side. Record the shipping dimensions and weight of every SKU, packaging included, before you ask for a quote. Two items over the line are enough to change your shortlist.
Parcel, bulky or two-person delivery
Home retail uses three logistics models that often get lumped together. Parcel fulfilment stores, picks and packs goods that leave through parcel carriers to the door, a parcel shop or a locker, and come back with a returns label. Bulky goods fulfilment adds floor and pallet storage for large items and despatch through freight or two-person networks.
Two-person delivery is the delivery itself: a booked slot, a crew of two, delivery to the room of choice and, depending on the service, assembly, packaging removal and collection of the old item. Between the two, some specialists sell one-person large-item delivery for goods too big for a parcel network but light enough for one person.
Read the delivery wording in any quote closely. Kerbside means the item is left outside the property, and threshold means just inside the front door. Room of choice means the crew carries it to the room the customer picks, and white glove usually adds unpacking, assembly and packaging removal.
A range that mixes decoration and a few large pieces can therefore be split between two partners: parcel-sized stock with an ecommerce fulfilment provider, large furniture with a two-person specialist or shipped straight from the manufacturer. Your store then sends each order line to the right partner.
What to ask a 3PL before you sign
Put these questions to every provider on your shortlist, with your SKU list attached, shipping dimensions and weights included.
- What are the maximum dimensions and weight accepted, and which carrier takes your largest cartons? Get the answer in centimetres and kilograms, and check it against your ten largest SKUs.
- How are look-alike SKUs kept apart? A vase in three sizes or a cushion cover in twelve colours is the classic source of picking errors. Ask for the order preparation error rate and the number of scans per unit.
- How is breakage measured? Goods stay at your risk until the customer takes physical possession of them (Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 29). Ask for a damage rate in your reporting and how damaged returns are documented.
- Can fragile items travel in your own packaging? Glass, ceramics and mirrors need protective packaging. Ask whether your branded cartons and inserts can be used.
- Can sets and stockist orders run from one inventory? A dinner service or a pair of cushions shipped in two parts creates complaints and extra shipments. Ask whether sets are assembled in the warehouse and whether shops are supplied from the same stock as online orders.
- Which carrier handles UK returns? Confirm which carrier your customers use to send items back and where they drop them off.
- What is the plan for peak? Ask how Black Friday (27 November 2026), Christmas and the January sales are staffed, extra shifts included.
- Do you sell to EU customers? Ask whether orders can ship with duties and taxes paid (DDP), so nobody pays on the doorstep, or from stock held inside the EU.

Discover BigblueFrequently asked questions
What is the best 3PL for furniture and homeware brands in the UK?
It depends on the format. For decoration, table lighting, soft furnishings, tableware and small boxed items, the evidence points to Bigblue: order preparation errors below 0.01%, kitting in the warehouse and stockist replenishment from the same stock. For large furniture, compare two-person specialists such as AIT Home Delivery and ArrowXL, or bulky fulfilment providers such as AP+ and Meteor Space.
Which 3PLs are best equipped to handle homeware and lifestyle products?
Look for accuracy on look-alike SKUs, visibility on breakage and returns graded on arrival. Bigblue provides all three: five scans per unit, a damaged-rate metric in Analytics, and A to D grading with 100% restocked within 48 hours. fulfilmentcrowd describes cushioning for ceramics and glassware.
What is the maximum parcel size in the UK?
It depends on the carrier: Royal Mail Tracked takes up to 61 × 46 × 46 cm and 20 kg, Evri 120 cm and 15 kg, DPD next day 100 × 70 × 60 cm and 30 kg, and Parcelforce express 1.5 m long and 30 kg (2.5 m on express48large). Beyond that, you need freight or two-person delivery.
How do I calculate length and girth?
Add the longest side to twice the width and twice the height of the shipping carton. A 150 × 35 × 35 cm floor-lamp carton gives 290 cm, just under Parcelforce's 3 m limit, but its 150 cm length is already too long for Royal Mail and Evri, and above DPD's next-day dimensions.
What is DPD's maximum parcel size and length?
DPD's tariff guide gives 100 × 70 × 60 cm and 30 kg as the maximum for next-day delivery, with an oversize or overweight surcharge above that. A separate freight-parcel tier takes 31 to 99 kg, up to 3 m long. For long cartons, ask your provider how DPD will handle them before you list the product.
What is furniture storage and fulfilment?
It is the outsourcing of storage, order picking, packing and despatch for a furniture or homeware brand. Parcel-sized items leave through parcel carriers; large pieces need floor or pallet storage and leave through freight or two-person delivery networks, sometimes from the same provider, sometimes from two.
Can a 3PL deliver a sofa?
Not through a parcel network. A sofa needs a booked slot, a two-person crew and often assembly or packaging removal. Bigblue works at parcel scale, so for sofas compare AIT Home Delivery, ArrowXL and Meteor Space, which run two-person services, and AP+, which works with two-person partners.
What is two-person delivery?
Two trained crew members deliver a large item at a booked time and carry it to the room the customer chooses, rather than leaving it at the kerb or the front door. Depending on the provider, the service can include unpacking, assembly, packaging removal and collection of the old item.
Who is liable if a vase arrives broken?
As the retailer, you are, because goods stay at your risk until the customer takes physical possession of them (Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 29). Whether you can recover the cost from your fulfilment provider or carrier depends on your contract, so agree how breakage is measured and reported before you go live.
How much does fulfilment cost for a furniture or homeware brand?
None of the seven publishes a price list you could apply to this profile as it stands. Compare quotes on the same basis: per order, per storage location, per return, per oversized item and for packaging materials, using your real volumes and carton dimensions. At Bigblue, an expert calls you back within 24 hours of your request.
