The best 3PL for baby brands in the UK can block a recalled lot before it ships and picks stock by expiry date. We compared six 3PLs, Bigblue, 3P Logistics, Whistl, Kammac, Amethyst and byrd, on five criteria: lot traceability, expiry-led picking, hygiene returns, picking accuracy and shipping to EU customers. Profiles draw on the providers' websites, company registers and official UK and EU guidance, all checked in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Lot traceability. Choose a 3PL that records the lot at goods-in and can block it in stock, so that a recalled lot can be stopped before it ships.
- Expiry-led picking. Food, formula and skincare should leave the shortest remaining shelf life first (FEFO), with alerts on lots about to expire.
- Hygiene returns. Choose a 3PL that grades every return on arrival against a written scale and lets you mark products as non-returnable in its returns portal.
- Picking accuracy. Ask each 3PL how many times each unit is scanned during picking, as baby ranges sell one product in several sizes.
- EU customers. Ask whether EU orders can ship from a warehouse inside the EU, so they do not cross a customs border.

Which UK product safety rules reach the warehouse?
Toys, baby cosmetics and baby food all carry identification or lot-marking obligations, and unsafe products must be withdrawn or recalled (GOV.UK, product recalls and alerts). The warehouse therefore has to record the lot at goods-in, so that a recalled lot can be found and blocked before it ships.
Which returned baby products can go back on the shelf?
Customers lose the right to cancel on sealed hygiene goods once they unseal them after delivery (regulation 28(3)(a)). Whether a product qualifies depends on its nature, and customers must be told before the sale.
Unworn clothing returned for the wrong size can usually be restocked after inspection, but opened feeding and skincare items rarely can. Opened equipment, such as a baby monitor or a car seat, needs its condition recorded first. Before go-live, decide which products are non-returnable, so that customers cannot select them in the 3PL's returns portal.
Can prams, cots and car seats ship as parcels?
| Service | Maximum weight | Maximum size | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Mail Tracked 24 | 20 kg | 61 × 46 × 46 cm | Fits clothing, feeding, toys and most gift sets |
| Evri | 15 kg | 120 cm long; length plus twice the sum of the two shortest sides under 245 cm | Long, light cartons such as a boxed play mat can pass |
| DPD next day | 30 kg | 100 × 70 × 60 cm for next-day delivery | Larger or heavier cartons carry an oversize or overweight charge |
| Parcelforce express24 | 30 kg | 1.5 m long; length and girth combined up to 3 m | An option for long, flat-packed cots |
| Bigblue UK standard and express delivery | 20 kg | 61 × 46 × 46 cm | Carrier chosen parcel by parcel by Voyager (Transport Management System) |
Most of a baby range sits well inside these limits. The exceptions are the large, high-value items: a pram or a travel system in its box, a cot, a highchair or a car seat base.
Measure the shipping carton of each SKU, packaging included, before asking for a quote. The range can then be split. Parcel-sized stock goes to an ecommerce fulfilment provider, and bulky items to a provider that stores pallets and ships them through larger services.
How do you choose a 3PL for EU customers after Brexit?
Since 1 July 2026, the EU has charged a temporary €3 customs duty on parcels worth up to €150 imported from outside the EU. The duty applies to each tariff line in the parcel. Goods of UK preferential origin declared outside the IOSS scheme can escape the duty, but not the handling fee below.
A €2 Union handling fee per item, whatever the parcel's value, has applied since 1 November 2026 (DG TAXUD guidance, 5 October 2026).
Stock imported into the EU in bulk, with customs cleared once at import, avoids both charges on every order. Ask each 3PL where your EU orders would ship from. Bigblue can ship them from its warehouses in France, Spain, Italy and Germany, while UK orders ship from the UK.
Which five questions decide your shortlist?
- How is the lot recorded at goods-in? Ask whether the lot number is captured automatically on arrival or keyed in by hand.
- How quickly can a lot be blocked in stock? Stock under investigation must not ship.
- Does picking follow the expiry date? Ask whether picking is FEFO (shortest shelf life first) and whether you get an alert before a lot expires. Our comparison for UK skincare brands covers the same logic.
- What does goods-in report? Ask what is checked on arrival and whether you see photos of anything received damaged.
- How are returns graded? Ask for the grading scale, how long grading and restocking take, and whether products you mark as non-returnable can be blocked from selection in the returns portal.

What is the best 3PL for baby brands in the UK?
For feeding, skincare, clothing, toys and gift sets shipped as parcels, the evidence points to Bigblue. It captures each lot at goods-in, can block a lot in stock and picks by expiry date. Its order preparation error rate is below 0.01%, and all returns are graded within 24 hours.
If your formula or baby food must be stored at a controlled temperature, compare Kammac, which cites temperature-controlled warehousing on its baby page. For car seats, pushchairs and other large nursery equipment, compare 3P Logistics.
What is baby product fulfilment?
It is the outsourcing of storage, picking, packing and despatch for a baby brand, to parents, retailers and marketplaces. Beyond pick and pack, it covers lot and expiry tracking, gift set assembly, returns grading and the ability to block a lot in stock during a recall.
Do baby products need batch and expiry tracking?
Yes, for most of a range. Toys must carry a type, batch, serial or model number (Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011). Baby cosmetics must carry a batch number (or product reference) and a durability date or period after opening (Article 19 of the cosmetics regulation).
Food and formula fall under food law, which requires withdrawal or recall of unsafe products.
Can a 3PL handle a baby product recall?
Yes, if it can block the lot in stock as soon as the recall starts. Test it before go-live on a real lot number, and agree who notifies customers and authorities.
How should baby products be stored?
Store them clean and dry, with each lot identified, and pick food, formula and skincare by expiry date, shortest shelf life first.
Can a 3PL create baby gift sets and bundles?
Yes. Newborn boxes, bath sets and hospital bags are assembled in the warehouse as kits, with branded packaging and inserts. Bigblue offers bundles and kitting, alongside personalisation rules for first orders, VIP customers or birthdays.
Which baby product fulfilment services cover Europe as well as the UK?
Bigblue runs 12 warehouses across 5 countries (France, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany), so UK orders ship from the UK and EU orders from inside the EU.
For any other 3PL, ask which site would ship your EU orders. A parcel sent from the UK to an EU customer crosses a customs border.
Can a 3PL handle bulky baby products?
Yes, with the right service for each size. UK parcel services such as Royal Mail Tracked 24 stop at 20 kg and 61 × 46 × 46 cm.
Boxed prams, cots and nursery furniture above that size need a provider that stores pallets and ships them through larger services.
How much does baby product fulfilment cost?
It depends on your volumes, the size of your items and the services you need. Compare quotes on the same basis, using your real volumes and carton dimensions: per order, per storage location, per kit, per return and for packaging materials.
